<title>Monster destroys 20,000 homes.</title>
<description>
A monster is running amok in the South East of England. A monster that has laid waste to
at least 20,000 homes in the past year. The homes in question? Well, they only existed on the drawing board at the moment they were wiped out. But wiped out they were, and the reason for this devastation? It_s our _monster_ - the dreaded Dartford Warbler.

<title>Protection Racket?</title>
<description>
The Dartford Warbler, for those that don_t know, is a small bird. A small bird that enjoys protected status. Thus adding to a long and growing list of things holding up, or preventing building development in the South East. There is very little home building that local authority planning departments can allow through nowadays.

<title>Is the Dartford Warbler a Red Herring?</title>
<description>
Ask anyone in the street how they feel about conservation and the environment, and every one, capitalist or socialist, modernist or traditionalist, will be in favour of _green issues_. But there_s only one thing wrong with our little feathered friend in this respect; you can find him throughout South West Europe and North West Africa. So robust is the little fella that he_s bounced back from localized _extinction_ in the past (for example he was _extinct_ in Dartford Heath itself for a while but has made a comeback).
No one wants to upset Mother Nature but do we really need to go to such lengths to protect a species that seems to be in no particular danger? We_re not just talking about native habitat here, DW has an effect on all planning anywhere in the localities covered by 11 authorities in Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. That_s ALL planning, including new-build between existing houses and extensions to existing houses. The result is that where we can build, we build higher, denser and above all dearer.

<title>Will the Dartford Warbler come to the table?</title>
<description>
We need to strike a balance here. Surely the planners have gone too far on behalf of DW. Can_t they protect his environment and leave room for that other endangered species _ the first-time buyer.
